[Pose Of the Week] Mastering Warrior II Pose (Beginner)

Warrior II Pose yoga tutorial

Lengthen, strengthen & stabilize in Warrior II Pose. Here’s how to do this foundational yoga pose properly…

Warrior II Pose (Virabhadrasana II) is a foundational yoga pose suitable for all levels. This standing pose builds strength and stability throughout the legs and core, improves balance and concentration, and is thought to stimulate the root and sacral chakras. Traditionally, the pose represents strength, focus, and courage. It can be helpful for sciatica and osteoporosis, and is traditionally believed to improve lung function, tone the abdominal organs, and treat infertility.

Be sure to keep your front knee directly above your ankle in the pose, and ensure your hips are square, not tilted forward or back. You may practice near a wall or a chair for balance if needed. Some beginners find it helpful to place a block under the front foot, and those with knee issues may wish to rest the front thigh on the seat of a chair to take strain off the knees. If you have trouble with balance, you can shorten your stance.

While this pose is generally safe for most people, you may wish to avoid this pose if you are currently suffering from diarrhea or experiencing other digestive distress, or if you have high blood pressure. Those with recent surgery or injury to the knees, neck, or shoulders should skip this one – or modify the pose to prevent irritation to the area.

How to Do Warrior II Pose:

  • Start in Mountain Pose with feet together.
  • Exhale and spread your legs 3-4 feet apart.
  • Place your hands on your waist.
  • Turn your right foot out to 90° and your left foot in by 15°.
  • Turn your head to the right and gaze in that direction.
  • Inhale and extend your arms to the sides, palms down, at shoulder height.
  • Exhale and bend your right knee, keeping it over your ankle and not past it.
  • Tuck your pelvis in and keep your spine straight.
  • Hold the position for 30-60 seconds, breathing deeply.
  • To come out of the pose, exhale and straighten your right knee.
  • Return to Mountain Pose, then repeat on the other side.
