[Pose Of the Week] Moon Bird Pose (Advanced)

Moon Bird Pose yoga tutorial

Uplift your strength, flexibility, and balance in Moon Bird Pose…

Moon Bird Pose (Chakorasana) is an arm balance pose with an added flexibility challenge. This pose builds off of Foot-Behind-the-Head Pose, and is often known as Foot Behind the Head Pose III, Leg Behind the Head III, Elevated Foot-Behind-the-Head Pose, or sometimes Partridge Pose.

This pose provides a deep stretch for the hips, hamstrings, and lower back, while building strength in the arms, shoulders, and core. It is also believed to improve energy (prana) flow throughout the body, and release stress and deep-seated negative emotions. It may also improve circulation in the lower body, tone the reproductive organs, and enhance digestion and elimination.

This is a peak-level pose, so be sure to fully warm up the hips, hamstrings, and arms before attempting it.

Moon Bird Pose requires a great deal of strength, balance, and flexibility, and should only be attempted by advanced yoga students. It should be avoided by those with recent injuries or surgery to the neck, shoulders, hips, knees, or lower back. Those with sciatica, hernia, back or hip problems, or who are pregnant should also avoid this one.

How to Do Moon Bird Pose:

  1. Begin in Foot-Behind-the-Head Pose.

  2. Ground your palms by your hips. Press into your palms, straighten your arms, and with a deep inhale, lift your hips off the floor.

  3. Extend your straight leg and using your core, bring it to about 60 to 75 degrees from the ground toward your chin. Tilt your head back slightly to bring your gaze to the sky.

  4. Hold for several breaths, then gently lower the leg to the floor, and bend the arms to bring the hips back to the mat.

  5. Repeat on the other side.
