[Pose Of the Week] Supported Side-Lying Corpse Pose
Relax fully and completely in Supported Side-Lying Corpse Pose…
Supported Side-Lying Corpse Pose (Parsva Savasana) – also known as Side-Lying Savasana, Side-Lying Relaxation Pose, or Supported Fetal Pose – is a restorative yoga pose that is great for relaxing fully. This is a great alternative for regular Corpse Pose, and can be especially good for pregnant women, or those who are experiencing back pain. This pose is also helpful for digestion (especially when lying on the left side), and may help to calm feelings of stress, anxiety, and overwhelm.
Depending on which side you lie on, this pose may have different benefits. Benefits of doing this pose on the right side include potentially lower blood pressure, improved blood circulation, and increased relaxation. Lying on the left side, you may experience improved digestion and better lymph drainage. Pregnant women are also encouraged to lie on the left side to improve blood flow to the fetus and heart.
You will need a few props for this pose, including a small and a large yoga bolster, or a stack of folded blankets. If you don’t have a yoga bolster, you can use several cushions instead. Position the bolsters/pillows where you prefer them. For example, you may also rest your head on your arm or a folded blanket, and rest your top arm on the other bolster or cushion in front of you as shown in the picture above.
How to Do Supported Side-Lying Corpse Pose:
Start by lying on whichever side feels more comfortable, with a bolster, pillow, or a folded blanket underneath your head.
Place a bolster or pillow (that is about the height of your top hip) lengthwise in front of your torso.
Bend your top leg and place your knee and shin on top of the cushion. Keep your hips square and make sure your top knee is level with your hip.
Close your eyes and breathe deeply, allowing yourself to relax. Stay here for 5-15 minutes.
